Get a Witness
The Best CDs of 2007
Scott Alarik

Garnet Rogers, "Get a Witness" Coffeehouse performance requires an artful blend of candor and bravado, and no one does it better than this Canadian songwriter. On a long-awaited concert album, even his torch songs feel like tours de force, sung in a glorious bass that shimmers with danger and grace. more...
Review by Kevin McCarthy:
Something new, something old and something borrowed.
Such describes "Get A Witness," the latest release from Garnet Rogers.
Recorded live over a three-day period in July of this year at The Black
Sheep Inn in Wakefield, Quebec, it's a mix of new offerings, previously
recorded songs and those from the likes of Karen Savoca, Bruce
Springsteen and the late Stan Rogers. more...
Review from WFMT:
I refrain from calling these "The Best of 2007" because the following
list is but one listener's biased opinion. I have culled these from the
many good recordings that crossed my CD player this year. I'm sure I
forgot to include a few notable recordings. All told, I estimate The
Midnight Special received at least 700 new recordings, and I listened to
about 400 new recordings, of which about 250 made it into the WFMT
library, and about 150 received airplay. I do not include reissues and
most compilations among these favorites. As the cut-off date is
November 15, some of the newest recordings will not be considered until
next year. more...
Review from WUSB:
Although I'm looking at a stack of new CD releases I really need to preview, I find myself hitting replay on the CD player for yet another listen to GET A WITNESS LIVE, the new one from Garnet Rogers. I'm envious of those who were in the audience at The Black Sheep in Wakefield, Quebec, this past July who saw Garnet and his superb band perform the songs that made it to this CD. A couple of long-time favorites by Garnet as well as a batch of brilliant new songs he has written received powerful performances that are captured on this new release. As always, Garnet's songs make you look for new ways to say "magnificent" as you find yourself quickly running out of superlatives.
