Kudos to Garnet Rogers for both the thought behind this release -- the picking, choosing and connection of the songs -- and the music in its totality. Plus, a tip of the hat for the iconoclasm displayed by the length of a number of the cuts here: 7:25 for "Beyond This Wall," "Summer
Lighting" coming in at 8:04, with "Empty Glass close behind at 8:10. "Night Drive" runs 11:10. Any discussion of anti-corporate music requires the inclusion of Garnet Rogers.

"On a long awaited concert album, even his torch songs feel like tours de force, sung in a glorious bass that shimmers with danger and grace.."

Greg Brown, Pete Heitzman, Garnet Rogers, Karen Savoca

Recorded over two hot August nights in the charming little village of Wakefield, Quebec, Live At The Black Sheep is an unrehearsed and absolutely riveting collection of original and traditional songs by the triple-bill of Greg Brown, Garnet Rogers, and the duo of Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman.

Although these four are old friends, this is the first time they’ve performed with each other in an extended round-robin style song swap. This exciting and challenging format reveals not only the well-known strengths of the featured singer, but also the intuitive and supportive talents of these musicians as accompanists. It’s a thrill to hear this impromptu quartet feeling their way so instinctively as they’re led through unknown territory. And while they hoot, goad and urge each other on, it’s apparent that these musicians are surprising and delighting each other at every turn. Live At The Black Sheep pulls you right into the action.
